All too often, we value the big results in life, yet ignore the little ones. This can hinder us when we are working towards our goals and dreams. We may be expecting big results from ourselves too soon, when what we need to focus on are the little steps that move us forward.
When we have a goal that we want to achieve, it is common at first to focus on the distance between where we are and where we want to be and to feel overwhelmed or discouraged by that gap. It is important to be mindful that there are many little actions that are needed in order for us to close the gap. Each little step we take makes a difference, no matter how small it is. Many of the goals that we set are desires that arise from the soul’s need to grow and expand. This means that our goals will require us to learn as we go.
What we need to remember is that we all learned to walk one step at a time and we often tipped over and needed to grab onto furniture for support. We were not too steady on our feet at first. This same thing happens when we set a goal to do something we have never done before. We are once again in the place of taking wobbly, little baby steps to close the gap between where we are and where we want to be. Just think of a 2 year old trying to walk across the kitchen floor into your waiting arms. Do you remember the joy you could see in them as the raised their leg and discovered it moved? Can you envision the unsteadiness as they took each step? Can you envision encouraging them and cheering them on?
Even though we may be adults, when we set goals that take us into unchartered territory, we need to remember that baby steps count.
We need to bring the same compassion and understanding to ourselves as we would to a little one learning to walk. We need to be patient with ourselves and to recognize that we may fall down once in a while and that we may need to reach toward helping hands for support as we move tentatively forward. We need to acknowledge each and every baby step that we take – the way a parent celebrates the first steps of a beloved child. When we can acknowledge each little step, we motivate ourselves to keep going.
